Special Castle Sets, the LEGO Idea Books

Hello again LEGO Fans, I apologise for my absence and have decided to bring you a little treat I have been holding for a while now as a way to making it up to you. Back in November I took a little break from my usual format to show you the LEGO idea books from the late 80s and 90s, well it’s time to do it again except now it’s with Castle sets.
Below we have the pages from all the LEGO idea books from the 80s and 90s as well as some very special photos of prototype builds that sadly never got made.
From the twenty plus idea books LEGO explored Castle on five occasions, in Idea Books 6000-1 (1980), 200-4 (1985), 250-1(1987), 260-1 (1990) and 267-1 (1997). Below are all the pictures, I apologise if any are slightly dark. The book from 1980 is particularly interesting as it tells a story of modern (or space) Lego figures going back in time to the castle era (I think), anyway have fun.

Legoman, I have done a few theme reviews and I plan on doing the rest for the castle and pirate factions. After that I will probably go into Western, Ninja, Adventures, POTC and LOTR so as you can see I've got a lot of work to do.

  7. Wow. Seeing these idea books takes me WAY back! It was always such a bummer that I didn't have enough Lego when I was a kid to make half the creations pictured.

  9. Oh my saints, just look at those unreleased sets! I swear that I have a recurring dream about finding things like this on shop shelves.

The bottom picture looks like a scene from the Three Musketeers. Highlights from the next one up include the old grey shields in brown, the fantastic variety of civilian minifigs and the clock face, then Lego tease us with the oversized red roof cones and varied heraldry in the second picture from the top-it's all just beautiful man.

Do you know how these pictures became public? Is there a mole smuggling them out of Lego HQ? Seriously, if these sets were available I would buy them in a heartbeat.

Great blog BTW-really personal and amusing writing.

  10. Steve, if you don't post again soon, I'm afraid you may never get a monkey. That would be tragic.

  12. Hi, Lego Steve!

I was wondering if you had encountered any fan-made plans for the castle enclosure from the 6000 Idea Book, or the lake castle shown later?

  13. My Dad has that Lego ideas book from the top, the one with the space ship at the end.
    It's from 1978 by the way. :D
